The Department of Foreign Language Education offers a B.A. program in English Language Education and graduate programs leading to M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English Language Education. The undergraduate program consists of professional courses including methodological and pedagogical approaches to foreign language teaching. The Department of Foreign Language Education provides courses related to second language acquisition and second language teaching methodology and organizes practice teaching in selected schools. Other courses of the program are offered by various departments of the Faculty of Education. Through elective courses, students are provided with opportunities to pursue individual interests in various cultural and professional subjects. Taking into consideration the latest developments in the field, students are provided with a solid foundation in the English language, English literature, methodology, educational sciences and linguistics in order to make them fully qualified teachers of English.
The M.A. and Ph.D. programs in ELT introduce major theoretical and methodological issues in English Language Teaching and provide students with a firm foundation in the theoretical and applied aspects of the field. Both programs focus on current issues in teaching and learning languages and professional development of language teachers.
The ELT Department concentrates on teaching English as a second / foreign language, which involves teaching the four main skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), teaching young children, teacher education, materials development, syllabus design, language acquisition, language testing and so forth. In the first and second years, students are given substantial education as to how English language works from different perspectives. Later in the third and fourth years, they are equipped with more professional expertise such as teaching methodology, curriculum design, testing and so forth. Students are assigned to primary and secondary schools for both classroom observation and practice teaching in the second and fourth years.
Upon completing the undergraduate studies, students acquire a Bachelor’s Degree (B.A) in English language teaching as a second / foreign language, which entitles the degree holder to apply for an M.A. in this Division or elsewhere. M.A is completed in 2 years minimum, 3 years maximum. An M.A degree holder may pursue a doctoral degree in this department or elsewhere. PhD usually takes 3 to 5 years to complete. Undergraduate and graduate studies (M.A and PhD) are offered only full-time.

The mission of the Department of English Language Teaching is to provide vision, leadership and support for quality teaching and learning of English language as well as to graduate well qualified language teachers. The Department of English Language Teaching will be a recognized site for language teaching and research of language, and literatures. The major aim is to equip the students with advanced and specialized knowledge in the field and to help them acquire skills for profession and research.
MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT
Our departmental mission is to create and disseminate knowledge about language, language teaching methodology, pedagogy as well as literatures. To this end, we offer coursework that prepares students effectively for teaching and other related professions in which an understanding of the nature, importance and multiple roles of language, literatures and methodology in paramount, in local, regional and global contexts. And we offer corresponding coursework at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
THE STUDENT PROFILE OF THE ELT DEPARTMENT
Most of the students in our department are the graduates of Anatolian or Anatolian Teacher Training High Schools. The number of the female students consists of the majority of the student population. In general, the students of our department are modern, eager to learn, and open to new cultures, changes and innovations. They have the habit of reading and thus they follow the current events. They are improved in terms of social skills; they are actively involved in different kind of activities.
OPPORTUNITIES AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Enrolled students have access to all university social, cultural and sports activities besides the activities of the students clubs. Sportsmen of university have degrees at different sports branches in Turkey and in Europe and all over the world.
The annual cultural and sports festival is held in the months of April and May by the student groups and clubs. Students and academicians from other universities are invited to join in the festivals. The festival includes sports competitions, conferences and panels, drama presentations, concerts, films and slide shows, all prepared and organized by student clubs.
Throughout the academic year, various departments of The University organize panels and conferences, concerts, excursions, and exhibitions. Academicians, authors, journalists, artists join these activities. The students can increase their vision, widen their horizon and deepen their understanding of the world as they join in these cultural and scientific activities.
